Landfill leachate is a dark, viscous liquid formed by the decomposition and decay of solid household waste within the landfill and its interaction with precipitation. In addition to organic substances and salts (such as ammonium salts), landfill leachate contains toxic chemical compounds at concentrations exceeding established maximum permissible limits for discharge into water bodies. The volume of leachate generated depends on the landfill's surface area, its operational lifespan, the volume of accumulated waste, the quality of the daily waste-layering and covering process, annual precipitation levels, and the season.
